In 1883 he travelled with Theo van Rijsselberghe to Algeria and Morocco in search for new light and different subject matter. He then in 1885 he visited in the company of a.o. the renowned American painter Whistler the villages of Volendam and Marken in Holland

This watercolour is probably executed in 1868 during his journey to Egypt, Syria and Palestina invited by the French artist and renowed Orientalist Jean-Leon Gerome (1824-1904). De Famars Testas travelled in the company of a.o. the art dealer Albert Goupil (1840-1884), and the French painters Leon Bonnat (1833-1922), Jean-Richard Goubie (1842-1899) and Paul-Marie Lenoir (d.1881). A comparable painting by Nijland is in the van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven since 1936.

The artist had a great admiration for Conrad

Thorvaldsen is busy working on the buste of the French Romantic painter Horace Vernet

Thorvaldsen and Vernet met in Rome and became close friends

This watercolor is executed mirror wise as against the large oil by Riedel of more or less the same subject which is kept in the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen. So it might be the case that the watercolor is after an etching or engraving?

According to Dr Margrethe Floryan, curator of the Thorvalsdsen Museum: "To judge upon the signature is exteremley difficult, not having seen the original version, but indeed it seems likely that the signature on this watercolor is Thorvaldsen’s. It also may be right that August Riedel did the watercolor"

Robert Verly was a Belgian administrator and painter in Congo in the 1950’s

He set up ateliers to preserve and pass on the craftmanship of the last surviving Congolese sculptors.
 Verly wanted to protect the sculptors from external (Western, commercial) influences and stimulate the continued development of the indigenous art styles

His paintings are seldom appear on the market and are therefore very rare
